Sunsoft 5B Audio on Everdrive N8

Posted by in News

A developer on Krikzz’s forum just released a custom Sunsoft 5A/5B/FME-7 Mapper which enables the expansion audio channels in Sunsoft’s Gimmick! game originally released on the Famicom. You will need an Everdrive N8 and either a Famicom or an expansion audio modded NES in order to hear the extra audio channels. The Japanese release of Gimmick! has one of the best soundtracks of any game released on the NES (gotta love that Sunsoft sampled bass), and If you have an Everdrive N8, you can download the update from the forum thread….read more

1080p HDMI NES Mod Kit

Posted by in News

Developer Kevtris has been working on a mod kit which allows you to add a 1080p HDMI output on the original NES. It’s been in development for quite some time but the results are just amazing. Being able to simply connect an NES to an HDTV without messing with SCART cables and video converters will be such a relief. According to the videos it is going into production and will initially be available through other console modding services, such as GameTechUS. Here is the latest update video from GameTechUS and…read more

8Bitdo Crissaegrim NES30 and FC30 PRO Controllers

Posted by in News

8Bitdo, who makes retro-styled controllers for moderna hardware, has just released a new bluetooth controller in the style of the NES and Famicom controllers. They feature analogue joysticks, with a button layout similar to that of a PS3 controller, as well as a built in CPU with upgradable firmware. Supported operating systems include Windows, Mac OS X, Android and iOS. I’m looking forward to trying this out with some Android and OS X multi-console emulators just to see if it can really capture the retro-feel as well as it does the…read more

Everdrive N8 Review

With the rarity of some NES games and the prices starting to get out of hand it can be really difficult to find those old games that have been calling out to you from your childhood. You’ve probably used emulators, and while they’re fun, they just don’t feel right. I’m not speaking of ethics but the feeling you get when you play a physical game. If you’ve got a Steam account, then you probably know what I mean; how many of those games have you actually played? Compare that to…read more

Finding a Gyromite Famicom Adapter

Posted by in Guides

If you’ve ever wanted to start importing Famicom games and play them on your NES you’ll find that not only do the cartridges have completely different dimensions, but the number of pins on the contained boards are completely different as well. To play them you’ll need a Famicom to NES adapter. The simplest solution would be to find an adapter that let’s you connect the Famicom cartidge directly to the adapater, without disassembly, such as the Honey Bee. The only problem with these solutions are that they can be hard to…read more

Opening an NES Cartridge

Posted by in Guides

If you’ve been collecting NES games for any length of time you’ve probably come across some cartridges that could use a good cleaning, but when you go to open them up you find that these aren’t any ordinary screws. Nintendo uses special 3.8mm security screws on their cartridges instead of standard phillips or flat head ones you find on most products. To open these you’ll need to purchase a 3.8mm security bit from either eBay, Amazon, or retro video game specialty stores. I recommend purchasing a pack that comes with…read more
